Spring 2012 Angling Focus
Saltwater fly fishing in Rhode Island will awaken in April. The next several months offer a great opportunity to prepare for the 2012 fishing season. On our agendas should be cleaning our equipment and particularly our fly lines, and accumulating fly patterns for the coming season. I have posted below several excellent early spring patterns that we use to target the first migrating Stripers.
As for my guiding activities... during late April and May I will be concentrating on the waters near Stonington, CT, Fishers Island, Little Narragansett Bay and our south coast salt ponds where we will experience extraordinary top water sight fishing for Stripers feeding on aquatic worms in the annual Rhode Island Cinder Worm emergence or "hatch" as it's referred to locally. Take a look at the short You Tube videos on this page to get a sense for this fishery. If you would like to charter with me to experience this fun I would suggest you call or email me in the near term as the prime dates will be reserved early. Rhode Island Cinder Worm hatch fishing is without question the closest thing you will experience to "dry fly" fishing in salt water. We fish in shallow water with little or no wind and chop to hamper our ability to locate and cast to these fish. The outing starts about 4pm and ends soon after dark. We will fish in several South Kingstown and Charlestown, RI salt ponds and will find rising fish within a very short run from the boat launch. You don't need to cast a long line and for those who do not fly fish we use light spinning tackle with worm patterns or small plastic baits....and the fish are often BIG and in many cases within 20-30 feet of the boat.
The months of May and June also offer excellent Striper fishing inside Narragansett Bay, from the entrance to the bay at Newport- north to Rose, Gould, Dyer, and Prudence Islands as well as the protected waters of Greenwich Bay and further north to Warwick's Green Island flats and northeast to Mt. Hope Bay near Bristol and Tiverton, RI. Our angling opportunities are endless.
